Academy Award-nominated director Aktan Arym Kubat (Abdykalykov) beautifully evokes on-screen the essence of his native Kyrgyzstan through introspection and stark realism. According to Aktan, "The narration in Kyrgyz films is very endogenous— contemplative, coming from our nation…it transfers the culture of a nomadic people." Movie audiences and critics worldwide have appreciated not only Aktan's celebrated storytelling ability but also his creative cinematography and use of color and sound.

Best known for his trilogy—Selkinchek, Beshkempir, and Maymil—Aktan draws from personal experience and artistry to create these poignant films about a boy's childhood and coming-of-age. Aktan eschews trained actors, constructed sets, and rigid scripts and erases the boundaries between the documentary and feature film to tell a profoundly Kyrgyz yet universal story through real people, settings and words. As in Beshkempir, Aktan further evokes the Kyrgyz spirit through his careful attention to traditions. Lovingly interwoven into the film's plot are the Kyrgyz customs of felting ala-kiiz carpets, embroidering decorative items, and stitching patchwork kuraks.

A graduate of the Frunze Arts School, Aktan began his film career in the 1990s at the Kyrgyzfilm Studio as a decorator. From these humble beginnings, he directed his first short-length films and several televised public service announcements for which he received international acclaim.

Through his works, Aktan has shed new light on his country and the human condition. Aktan's films have been shown and awarded prizes at prestigious film festivals around the world. In turn, Art of Silk Road 2003 is pleased to honor Aktan Arym Kubat with its Lifetime Achievement Award.
