The symbol of this year's festival was chosen along with these words: "My house is the planet Earth." This is the tunduk, the top rim and crowning framework of the yurt, the traditional dwelling of the Kyrgyz nomads. The meaning of tunduk is multifaceted for the Kyrgyz. It is connected with the philosophy of existence. It is the home and hearth, the solid earth under our feet, and the endless cosmos over our heads. To wish happiness and shared life under one roof, our ancestors said, "Áèð òóíäóêòîí êóí êîðãóëî," which literally means, "Look at the sun through the same tunduk." Does not the national idea "Kyrgyzstan—our common home" come from this? Regarding wealth, which pours from the fate of abundance, the Kyrgyz say, "Òóíäóêòîí êóþëóï òóðãàíäàé."

Dwellings of nomads, including Kyrgyz people, were always open to welcome peace and light.

The tunduk is a symbol of the sun and the emblem of our government. Roaming together with a people in full accordance with the movements of the Earth, it becomes her satellite, the dwelling of a people who create and speak in the ancient and timeless language of symbols.

By my deep approval, patronage of the people, noted talent of the artists, and worldly support of high art is the very first responsibility of the government and the whole society. This is especially necessary in hard times and deep transitions.

I wish health to all the participants of the festival, and may all your creative and other wishes come true! May the inspiration that brings together people and cultures not leave your souls!

The President of the  Kyrgyz Republic A. Akaev

Dear Friends!

On behalf of the people of Kyrgyzstan I would like to greet the participants and guests of the second international festival "Art of Silk Road 2003."

The very fact that our art festival celebrating great artists and national craftsmen is becoming a tradition in our hospitable land of Kyrgyzstan makes me very glad. It is also symbolic that the festival opens on the eve of the Kyrgyz Worldwide Gathering and coincides with the Year of Kyrgyz Statehood.

To commemorate the first festival last year, a graceful monument was erected at the door to the temple of the muses, the Kyrgyz National Museum of Fine Arts named for G. Aitiev - itself the embodiment of the uninterrupted connection between times and people.
